In 1 Peter 4, the Apostle explains how following Jesus brings various levels of suffering and persecution. This suffering should not be a surprise to Christians. Instead, it should cause us to rejoice because it reminds us we are following Jesus and living holy. As we read through this chapter, notice how Peter contrasts suffering for Jesus and suffering because of evil.
In 1 Peter 3, the Apostle explains how husbands and wives should live in obedience to Jesus, and gives commands to all believers for living as exiles in the world. He finishes the chapter by contrasting suffering for righteousness and suffering for evil. As we study this chapter, watch how Peter encourages us to live godly lives but also prepares us for the persecution that comes with godliness.
In 1 Peter 2, the Apostle uses the imagery of a building to explain the work of Jesus and the responsibility of Christians. Jesus is the cornerstone in a new spiritual house that God is building, and we are living stones in that structure. As living stones, we should submit to the leadership structure of this world and point people to Jesus with our love.
In 1 Peter 1, the Apostle reminds us what it means to be born again. As Christians, we get an entirely new start, treasures that don’t corrupt, eternal life, and faith that helps us see what God sees. Our faith will be tested in a culture that hates God and mocks His children, but our faith will grow as we walk in obedience to Jesus.
In Hebrews 11-13, the writer defines faith and explains the role it plays in our life. Faith impacts our daily decisions and shapes our values to reflect the Kingdom of God. As we read through these chapters, we are reminded of the high price our ancestors paid to follow God, and we are challenged to follow their example of faith.
In Hebrews 9-10, the writer reminds us that salvation is not found in rituals or religious activities. Salvation is only through Jesus. As we read through these chapters, it is clear how our heart wanders from Jesus and turns salvation into a religious work. But, Jesus did not die to bring us a New Old Covenant, He came to fulfill the Old Covenant and establish an entirely New Covenant.
In Hebrews 6-8, the writer warns not to be deceived about salvation. Being close to the things of God is not the same as being transformed by the things of God. Hebrews 6 begins with a warning about living a religious lifestyle and finishes with God’s promise of salvation. As we read through chapter 7 and 8, we are reminded how God’s plans are superior to ours.
In Hebrews 3-5, the writer establishes the supremacy of Jesus over Moses and connects Israel's promised land rest to the Christian's rest in Jesus. As we study these chapters, we are reminded that Jesus is the only way to God and we must decide to follow Him daily.
