In Hebrews 9-10, the writer reminds us that salvation is not found in rituals or religious activities. Salvation is only through Jesus. As we read through these chapters, it is clear how our heart wanders from Jesus and turns salvation into a religious work. But, Jesus did not die to bring us a New Old Covenant, He came to fulfill the Old Covenant and establish an entirely New Covenant.
In Hebrews 6-8, the writer warns not to be deceived about salvation. Being close to the things of God is not the same as being transformed by the things of God. Hebrews 6 begins with a warning about living a religious lifestyle and finishes with God’s promise of salvation. As we read through chapter 7 and 8, we are reminded how God’s plans are superior to ours.
In Hebrews 3-5, the writer establishes the supremacy of Jesus over Moses and connects Israel's promised land rest to the Christian's rest in Jesus. As we study these chapters, we are reminded that Jesus is the only way to God and we must decide to follow Him daily.
In Hebrews 1-2, the writer establishes the supremacy of Jesus over angels and the dangers of drifting from our obedience to Him. As we read these two chapters, we are challenged to identify anything in our life that opposes Jesus' leadership, and we avoid spiritual drift that comes from knowing the truth but not applying it.
In Joshua 20-24, Israel created cities of refuge, three Hebrew tribes choose comfort over community, and Joshua gave a final command before he died. As we read these final chapters in the book of Joshua, we are reminded of our responsibility to point non-believers to Jesus and the joy we share in His family.
In Joshua 13-19, Israel completed the conquest of Canaan, and God gave the 11 tribes an inheritance of land. However, the Levites were priests and not given any land. Their inheritance was to steward the presence of God and care for the spiritual needs of the other tribes. As we read about Israel's inheritance, we are reminded of our inheritance in Jesus and the reward for walking in obedience.
In Joshua 5-12, Israel began the conquest of Canaan. They conquered Jericho and Ai, formed a covenant with the Gibeonites, gained a massive triumph during a battle against five kings, and expanded their victory into the northern regions of Canaan. As we read about Joshua's leadership and Israel's obedience, we see the parallel with our sanctification. These stories reinforce the importance of cutting away sin in our life, following Jesus with 100% obedience, and walking with integrity.
In Joshua 1-4, Moses is gone, and God appoints Joshua as the new leader over Israel. Their instructions are to bring judgment to the foreign kings of Canaan and make the promised land their new home. Israel follows Joshua's leadership and the first city to conquer is Jericho. As we study these chapters, we see Jesus as our better Joshua and understand the importance of following His leadership in our sanctification process.
